I don’t normally get cruller-style donuts. I don’t know why other than they’re a rarer find than other styles. However, this was a good one. I should consider eating more of these when I find them. Since I don’t normally eat crullers, I don’t know how they’re supposed to taste. This one was a little more moist than most donuts turn out to be. In fact, the chocolate frosting was a little messier than the chocolate-frosted cousin I purchased that morning, too.
The dough reminded me of popover bread with the doughy that is also a bit “airy”. It’s soft and sweet. The rest of the swirling texture and shape didn’t have as much of an effect on the taste. The shape just added a little visual flair. But perhaps the moistness is also a key aspect of the cruller.
I went pretty conservative on this donut. I didn’t know what to expect from the cruller, and figured this would be a good benchmark to set against all future crullers.
