Da Vinci’s French Toast

I love French toast. I love donuts. So why not meld the two into one delicious combination?! If you haven’t read before, I’m not normally one to actually consume a donut that brings two disparate flavors together, but given donut reviews, I’ll do things out of the ordinary for the sake of trying new things.

This donut was another foray into the unknown. The taste was certainly spot on being very “French toast-y”. Though, as I’ve mentioned in other posts for donuts from Da Vinci’s, I’m just not a fan of the cake dough. If you are, give this donut a go.

Da Vinci’s Maple Bacon

Recently, I reviewed a Maple Bacon Donut from SK Donuts out in LA. It was so good that I decided to give this Maple Bacon donut a try. Bacon was good, but the donut was only “okay”. The bacon and maple were good flavors, but I was thrown off by the denser dough (D2). Though, the maple and bacon brought a little more softness to the dough vs. the Halloween Sprinkles donut.

Da Vinci’s Halloween Sprinkles

Call me a sucker for sprinkles. Then, call me a obsessive sucker for holiday-theme sprinkles. When I walked into the store and saw Halloween sprinkles, I knew what donut was going definitely going to be eaten (and reviewed).

Obviously, this was not a specialty donut aside from the colored sprinkles. Though, this was a little donut that was more cake-like with a denser Dough Density (D2). It was an okay donut, I admit. Nothing too out of the ordinary. Great for kids.

SK’s Strawberry Nutella Donut

This was a delicious donut. I don’t normally go for a donut like this, nor one so big. However, I’m so glad I did. There was a light sugar sprinkled around the donut that was nice, subtle touch. The strawberries tasted fresh while the rest of the filling was light. Add in the donut which was near perfection — not doughy, but not too light. This was a fantastic donut. Plus, it complicated the donut I paired it with — the SK Maple Bacon Donut.

Where Is SK Donuts & Croissant?

Local Moose’s Salted, Milk, & Honey Donut

Salted Caramel. Milk tea. Honey graham. All things I don’t typically get. No, this donut was not all three of those together. However, the first part of each item listed tends to throw me off the second part of each item. Why? Because I usually like the second parts of teach item alone. Alas, The Local Moose did not have many donuts left at the end of the day, and this donut could be made fresh — and it’s their specialty. Who am I to deny a specialty that the Cafe wants to make for me fresh?!

Before the donut was served, I wasn’t really sure what to expect. When it was served, I didn’t realize how messy this would be. The milk was very much still in milk form, so it was noticeably dripping everywhere. It was exactly as you would expect with all three flavors — salt, milk, and honey — coming in as a symphony of tastes. The dough was light enough, too, that the symphony hit each flavor just enough without overwhelming. Well, the salt was a bit stronger than the rest and it came at the back of the mouth… right at the end.

It was a good donut for sure. Though, it definitely left me wanting. Perhaps there’s such a thing as “too light”.

Local Moose’s Ginger Cracker and Cinnamon Donut

Mmm Donut is really getting me to try new donut flavors I wouldn’t normally. I’m not really a fan of ginger… or cinnamon. However, as I walked into The Local Moose Cafe, I realized that this was the only donut left till the man behind the counter offered a fresh donut — the Salted, Milk, & Honey Donut. So, I first committed to this one.

I admit I was a little negatively biased about this donut because it had two ingredients I tend to not care for. However, I’m glad that I tried this out. I now know that yeah, this type of donut isn’t really my thing. The two flavors give it a spiciness that I’m not a big fan of. It’s a light spice, for sure. However, it was a flavor that I don’t particularly love on a donut. A candy cane or plainly as a cracker? Sure, in their respective forms.

SK’s Maple Bacon Donut

First, I love bacon. I love donuts. However, I have never gotten bacon on a donut. I’ve had bacon in ice cream — that was fantastic. So while I was on vacation in LA, #YOLO — maple bacon donut, it is! And boy did I enjoy each sweet and savory bite. Seriously. The dough, as I mention in the SK Strawberry Nutella Donut post, is perfect. This donut was more conventional in shape than the Strawberry Nutella, however, the dough was still perfection. As the other donut stretched out jaws, this one was of “normal” height. Each bite was light. The bacon added a chewy-ness to each chew while adding a slight salty undertone. Then, as my mouth enjoyed each bite and squeeze of the donut, the maple syrup frosting kicks in to usher in a sweet wave that made my mouth smile. I may have to get more donuts with bacon while adding bacon to more unconventional dishes.
